LG Fridge Er FF Error Code: Meaning and How to Fix It
Er FF (also written ER FF or rF on some displays) means the freezer evaporator fan is not working correctly. In most cases frost and ice have built up around the fan so it cannot spin, and the control board reports the error when it gets no proper fan feedback.
The evaporator fan blows cold air over the freezer coils and into both compartments. If ice from a defrost problem, a door left ajar, or humid air coats the fan area, the blades slow down or stop completely. The fridge then warms up, you may hear clicking or buzzing as the fan tries to turn, and Er FF appears on the display.
Common causes
- Ice and frost buildup around the freezer evaporator fan
- A door left open or a door gasket that no longer seals
- A failed evaporator fan motor
- A defrost system fault (heater, sensor or board) letting ice accumulate
- Loose wiring between the fan and the control board
How to fix it, step by step
- Do a full manual defrost. Move food to a cooler, unplug the refrigerator, and leave the doors open for 8–24 hours. This melts the ice locking the fan — the single most effective fix for Er FF.
- Check the door gaskets. While it defrosts, inspect the seals for tears or gaps and clean them with warm water. A leaking gasket lets in the moisture that becomes fan-blocking ice.
- Listen for the fan after restart. Plug the fridge back in and press the door switch in. You should hear the evaporator fan run smoothly, with no clicking or grinding.
- Confirm temperatures recover. Give the fridge 24 hours. If temperatures return to normal and Er FF stays away, the problem was frost.
- Book service if the code returns. Er FF returning within days means the defrost system or the fan motor itself is faulty and needs a technician.
Skipping the defrost and just clearing the code rarely works — if ice is physically holding the fan, the error comes back within hours. The boring full defrost is the real fix.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Er FF and Er rF on an LG fridge?
They are fan errors for different compartments: Er FF is the freezer fan, Er rF is the refrigerator (fresh-food) fan. Both are commonly caused by frost buildup.
Can I use a hair dryer instead of a full defrost?
Carefully, on low heat, after unplugging — but never force panels off or pry at ice, and a natural defrost is safer for the liner and refrigerant lines.
Why does Er FF keep coming back every few weeks?
Recurring ice means the root cause is still there: usually a failing defrost heater or sensor, or a door gasket leaking moist air.
