Bosch Dishwasher E24 Error Code: Meaning and How to Fix It
E24 is a Bosch dishwasher draining fault: the machine tried to pump out its water and something is stopping it. The usual causes are a blocked filter, a kinked drain hose, or the drain pump cover inside the sump not being clipped in place.
At the start of a cycle a Bosch dishwasher runs a short drain test. If old water is still sitting in the sump when it should be empty, the machine stops and displays E24. Interestingly, one of the most common triggers is not a blockage at all — it is the small plastic pump cover in the bottom of the tub, which pops loose after cleaning and blocks the pump from working efficiently.
Common causes
- Food debris blocking the dishwasher filters
- The drain pump cover in the sump loose or missing
- A kinked, blocked or badly routed drain hose
- A blocked sink trap or garbage disposal connection (especially after a new disposal install — the knockout plug not removed)
- A failed drain pump
How to fix it, step by step
- Clean the filters. Twist out the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub, rinse the filter set under the tap, and remove debris from the sump.
- Check the pump cover. In the sump, find the small drain pump cover beside the filter. It must be clipped firmly in place — if it wobbles or is missing, reseat or replace it. This single check fixes a surprising number of E24 errors.
- Inspect the drain hose. Look under the sink: the hose should loop up high (high loop or air gap) and be free of kinks and blockages.
- Check the disposal connection. If a garbage disposal was recently fitted, confirm the knockout plug where the dishwasher hose connects was actually removed.
- Reset and test. Restore power, run the shortest cycle, and confirm the machine drains at the start without showing E24.
Never run a Bosch dishwasher with the pump cover removed 'to test it'. The cover holds the pump's flow path together; without it the machine can drain poorly and throw E24 even with a perfectly healthy pump.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bosch E24 the same as E25?
They are close cousins. E24 is a general draining fault; E25 usually points specifically at a blocked drain pump or a loose pump cover.
Why does E24 appear right after I cleaned the filters?
Because the pump cover often gets knocked loose during cleaning. Push it back until it clicks and the error usually disappears.
How much does an E24 repair cost?
If it is the filter, hose or pump cover, it costs nothing. A replacement drain pump fitted by a technician is the only costly scenario.
