Whirlpool Washer F21 Error Code: Meaning and How to Fix It

Updated October 21, 2026 · FixTheCode

Quick answer

F21 is Whirlpool's long-drain error. The washer started draining but the water level did not drop fast enough, so the control stopped the cycle. Nine times out of ten the cause is a clogged drain pump filter or a blocked drain hose — not a broken machine.

Whirlpool front-load washers watch the pressure switch while the pump runs. If the tub is still holding water after the allowed drain time, F21 appears (you may see it alternate with the remaining cycle time). Because the machine cannot spin a tub full of water, clearing the drainage path almost always clears the code.

Common causes

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Cancel and drain. Press Pause/Cancel twice to clear the display, then select Drain & Spin to try emptying the tub.
  2. Clean the pump filter. Unplug the washer, remove the lower front panel (on models that have one), and unscrew the drain pump filter over a tray. Remove everything trapped inside and check the pump impeller turns freely.
  3. Inspect the drain hose. Check the full length of the hose for kinks and blockages, and confirm the standpipe itself drains freely.
  4. Reduce suds. If the load was very sudsy, run a rinse cycle with no detergent and switch to the correct HE detergent dose.
  5. Test the pump. If F21 returns with everything clear and you hear no pump sound during Drain & Spin, the pump needs replacement.

A sock or coin that escapes the drum often ends up in the pump filter — F21 after washing small items like baby socks or cleaning cloths is a classic sign the filter has caught something.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between F21 and F02 on a Whirlpool washer?

They are related: F02 is also a long-drain fault on many models, and F21 is the drain error shown on Duet and later models. The checks — filter, hose, pump — are the same.

Can I open the door when F21 is showing?

The door stays locked while the tub holds water. Drain via the pump filter area first; once the water is out, the lock releases.

Does F21 mean my pump is dead?

Not usually. Most F21 codes are blockages. A pump is only suspect after the filter and hose are proven clear.
