LG Washer OE Error Code: Meaning and How to Fix It
OE is LG's drain error: the washing machine is unable to drain the water used during the wash cycle. The most common causes are a clogged drain pump filter or a kinked drain hose — both are things you can check yourself in about 15 minutes.
When an LG washer cannot empty its tub within the allowed time, it stops and displays OE (on newer models you may also see E03 or E21 for the same fault). LG's official help library points to two main culprits: the drain pump filter, which traps coins, lint and hair, and the drain hose behind the machine. Excess detergent can also trigger it, because heavy suds create air pockets the pump cannot push out.
Common causes
- A clogged drain pump filter (coins, lint, buttons, hair)
- A kinked, pinched or clogged drain hose
- Too much detergent creating excess suds
- A blocked household standpipe or sink drain
- A failed drain pump (least common)
How to fix it, step by step
- Check the drain hose. Pull the washer forward carefully and confirm the drain hose is not kinked, pinched against the wall, or clogged.
- Clean the drain pump filter. On front-load models, open the small access panel at the bottom front. Place a shallow tray and towels down, unscrew the filter slowly, let the water drain, remove all debris, and refit it firmly.
- Run a spin-only cycle. Start a Spin Only cycle and listen for the drain pump's hum. If water drains away and no code appears, the blockage was the problem.
- Run a tub clean cycle. If the filter was clean, excess suds may be the trigger. Run a Tub Clean cycle and use less detergent in future loads.
- Call for service if OE returns. If the hose and filter are clear and OE still appears — or you cannot hear the pump hum at all — the drain pump itself may have failed and the unit needs repair.
Clean the pump filter every few months as routine maintenance. Most OE codes are simply a filter that has not been cleaned in a year or more, quietly collecting coins and lint until the pump can no longer push water past it.
Frequently asked questions
What does OE stand for on an LG washer?
OE stands for Outlet Error — the washer tried to drain but the water could not get out in time.
Can too much detergent cause an OE error?
Yes. LG notes that excessive suds create air pockets in the pump, which the machine reads as a drain failure. Use HE detergent and less of it.
Is an OE error expensive to fix?
Usually not. A clogged filter or kinked hose costs nothing to fix yourself. Only a failed drain pump requires a paid repair.
